Keep that ‘wow factor’ for longer!
We want your diamonds to be forever, as the saying goes!
Can you remember how good your diamond made you feel the first time it sparkled up at you? We hope so, because with the proper care your diamonds really can sparkle at you for a lifetime.Although diamonds are the hardest known substances on earth, they can still be scratched or chipped by a hard knock, so you should give them special care when it comes to cleaning and storing them to maintain their brilliance and sparkle.
So here are some tips that will help you preserve the life and beauty of your diamond:
~ One diamond can scratch another so it’s best to store them separately. To help keep their sparkle gently clean with a mild cleaning solution, rinse thoroughly with water and dry with a soft cloth.
~ Try not to wear your diamond when doing rough work, gardening, playing sports and that type of thing. Even though diamonds are durable, this type of activity can expose them to damage or discolouration.
~ When putting your diamonds in a jewellery box, try to store them individually in soft jewellery bag, as they can easily scratch each other as well as other softer jewellery.
~ Always remove diamond jewellery when using cleaning chemicals or when you go swimming. Bleach and chlorine won’t harm the diamond, but they can pit or discolour gold and platinum mountings.
~ Hairspray, perfume, aftershave, make-up etc. should be applied before you put on your jewellery to minimize contact with them. Build up from such things can make your diamond appear dull.
~ The wonderful thing about diamonds is that they never ever lose their beauty and brilliance once they’re cut. You simply have to keep them clean to keep that look that you had the day you bought them.
~ Cleaning is simple; to help keep their sparkle, gently clean your diamonds with a mild cleaning solution (heavily diluted washing up liquid is ideal), rinse thoroughly with water and dry with a soft cloth.
Warning signs to look out for
If your ring is ever snagging on anything such as jumpers and bedding, it’s usually a sign that there is a prong lifted up off a diamond, or that it needs filing to make it smooth again. We recommend you give this your immediate attention.
Loose prongs won’t hold your gemstone securely, leaving it at risk of falling out. You also don’t want to wait until you snag your ring on a delicate piece of clothing either, which could damage it irreparably.
Another warning sign is an audible one. If when you hold your ring up to your ear, you can hear a diamond making noise when you shake your ring, it’s a sign that your setting is loose. It’s time to bring it in to us to check it, to minimise the risk of your losing a gemstone.
Nothing like a regular check-up!
We recommend that you bring your diamonds in for a check-up and a professional cleaning once a year.
Our working jewellers can especially detect flaws or other problems that you may have not noticed before, such as a build-up of dirt that may lead to discolouring. Likewise, it is important to have the claws that hold your diamonds in place checked, to make sure they are not loose, otherwise you could lose your diamond without even knowing it.
