We all know that the size, or rather the carat weight of a stone is not the most important thing about your diamond engagement ring.
Yet when it comes to engagement rings, most of our customers want to see the biggest stone they can afford. We are of course happy to help achieve that, but there is something else we ask you to consider.
What if you could have a bigger size stone in your perfect engagement ring that looks the size you want without spending that much more money?
Whether you’re still shopping for your perfect ring or you’ve already found the one, these are our five tips for making your engagement ring look bigger than it actually is. Believe it or not, these tricks don’t always require spending extra cash.
1. Making the cut
The images of celebrity sized engagement rings that sparkle blindlingly from the camera’s flashbulbs can give the impression that it’s all about the size. In fact, the better your diamond is cut with the proper proportions, the more your diamond will sparkle, and it will look bigger.
Also, you don’t necessarily have to pay more for a better cut. For example, a ‘good’ cut diamond will reflect most of the light that enters it, but is much less expensive than a ‘very good’ cut one. Read more about diamond cut.
2. Choose a slim band
When it comes to creating an illusion using jewellery, it’s often all about proportion. A slim band will focus the eye on your diamond.
If you also choose a setting that increases the overall amount of light that’s reflecting into your ring, it will enhance the appearance of the centre stone.
3. Choose a band in a bright white metal
As they say in interior design, “a mirror will make any space seem larger.” The same principle also applies to diamond rings.
If you choose a platinum mount, the image of your stone will be reflected in the metal, creating the illusion of a bigger size.
4. Put a halo on it
One of the easiest ways to make your centre diamond look bigger is by putting a ring of smaller diamonds around it – or choosing a halo ring as they’re called. One of the great things about a halo setting is that for not much more money, you can make your diamond seem larger.
For example, it will cost more money to increase the size of your diamond from say a 1.50ct to a 2.00ct diamond than it would to just add a halo of diamonds around your centre stone. Take a look at our Halo Engagement ring range.
5. Side stones are key
When you add side stones to your engagement ring, what you’re doing is taking the eyes off of the main focal point, which is the centre diamond, and looking at the ring as a whole. Side stones not only make your center gemstone look bigger, they also make your ring as a whole look like a bigger piece of jewellery.
Ultimately, we want you to choose a stone and a ring that you really fall in love with! Although size isn’t everything, there are still plenty of ways to make your diamond seem at least a teeny bit bigger with our tips.
